1 NOTE William Douglas was apparently the first member of the family to mov
2 CONC e from Maryland to Virginia. According to Wilson Cary, William Douglas w
2 CONC as still living in Charles County, Maryland in 1761. This would mean t

2 CONT
2 CONT It is unfortunate that many of the records of Westmorland, Stafford an

1 NOTE John Douglas arrived in Charles county in 1654 at the age of eightee
2 CONC n after an approximate three month voyage. When he left Scotland his f
2 CONC ather, Sir Robert Douglas, had lost all of his lands his home had been b
2 CONC urned and looted and he was bankrupt due to his loyality to King Charle

2 CONC cotland and the default of the city of Glasgow on a considerable amoun
2 CONC t of money owed to him for the sale of the Gorbals barony to the city.
2 CONT
2 CONT So John had lost his inheritance his birth right and his father was in d

2 CONT Col. Douglas was actively involved with the Charles county militia and w

1 NOTE Accused of fortifying and holding Tantallon Castle 28 Nov 1581, agai
2 CONC nst the King.
2 CONT
2 CONT Laird Malcom Douglas was involved in an intrigue to release Mary Queen o
2 CONC f Scots from prison and return her to the throne. In August 1582 he alo
2 CONC ng with the Earl of Gowrie, The Earl of Angus, et al, participated in t
2 CONC he "Raid of Ruthvn". They captured King James and held him prisoner f
2 CONC or two years. The King escaped and the Ruthven Raiders were tried for k
2 CONC idnapping and treason of the King. Malcom Douglas of Mains and Cunning
2 CONC ham of Drumquhassil were found guilty and were hanged on 9 February 158
2 CONC 4.
2 CONT
2 CONT After he was hanged he was proven innocent of treason charges.
2 CONT
2 CONT Malcolm DOUGLAS 8th Laird of Mains was born about 1550.He died on 9 Feb
2 CONC ruary 1585 being Executed at Edinburgh Cross.Sir James Edmonstone, 6th o
2 CONC f Duntreath, in 1578, (before the death of his father) obtained from Co
2 CONC lin 6th Earl of Argyll, Justice-General of Scotland, the grant of a dep
2 CONC utation for holding justiciary courts at the fortalice of Duntreath, up
2 CONC on the criminals therein named. Then in 1584 he received the " escheat. o
2 CONC f Mungo Edmonstone, the brother of James of Newton, fallen through his t
2 CONC reasonable assistance at the late surprizal of the Castle of Sterling."
2 CONT
2 CONT Stirling Castle had been seized by adherents of the 1st Earl of Gowrie w
2 CONC ho, following the notorious "Ruthven Raid" of 1582, had held ascendancy o
2 CONC ver James VI for almost a year. Gowrie, taken prisoner, was brought bef
2 CONC ore "Mr James Graham sitting as Justice," and assisted by men who inclu
2 CONC ded "James Edmonstone of Duntreath. The indictment was found relevant, a
2 CONC nd the Earl, found guilty by his peers, was executed."
2 CONT
2 CONT In the same year of 1584 Sir James, to his great discredit, acted as an "
2 CONC agent provacateur" in dealings involving friends. On the Earl of Gowrie
2 CONC 's arrest his chief supporters, who included the Earls of Angus and Mar
2 CONC , fled to England. The King greatly fearing their influence, and knowin
2 CONC g that there was strong feeling against his favourites, the young Duke o
2 CONC f Lennox and James Stewart Earl of Arran, proclaimed that anyone inform
2 CONC ing upon agitators would receive not only a pardon but also a special r
2 CONC eward.
2 CONT
2 CONT Later evidence suggests that Sir James was by then in debt. On his own a
2 CONC dmission he declared that he "had been led to make a confession of a th
2 CONC reefold conspiracy of the exiled Lords against the King, of which he ha
2 CONC d been informed by Black John Hume of the Law, who came twice to him, e
2 CONC ach time with a letter of credit of the Earl of Mar, the knowledge of w
2 CONC hich now preyed on his conscience."
2 CONT
2 CONT But through family connections he was, in the words of a contemporary, "
2 CONC the Duke of Lennox's man". Thanks to his influence he had been knighted
2 CONC , and as was all important, still held his land from the King.
2 CONT
2 CONT Therefore when two of his neighbours were suspected of treasonable cons
2 CONC piracy Sir James was persuaded (he said afterwards that Arran threatene
2 CONC d and suborned him) to agree to be charged with the same crime of which
2 CONC , upon his confession, he was promised he would be absolved.
2 CONT
2 CONT The men in question, Malcolm Douglas of Mains and John Cunningham of D
2 CONC rumwhassill, were both of good character, Mains in particular being res
2 CONC pected for his valour and his manhood. Nonetheless Robert Hamilton of E
2 CONC glismachen betrayed them, saying that they had conspired to kidnap the K
2 CONC ing out hunting "and detain him in some stronghold till the Lords might c
2 CONC ome and receive him."
2 CONT
2 CONT Mains and Drumwhassill were arrested and, together with Duntreath, were p
2 CONC resented before the Justice, Mr John Graham, on the 9th February 1585. D
2 CONC untreath was the first to be accused of plotting to kidnap the King. Th
2 CONC en Drumwhassill charged with the same crime, was said to have consulted w
2 CONC ith him thereupon in the churches of Strathblane and Killearn. Mains de
2 CONC nied all involvement but all three were convicted and declared guilty o
2 CONC f treason. Drumwhassil and Mains, condemned to death, were hanged on th
2 CONC e same day in the public street of Edinburgh, but Sir James Edmonstone, s
2 CONC ignificantly, was pardoned.
2 CONT
2 CONT However he may have benefited from his double dealing, he must for some t
2 CONC ime afterwards, have lived in constant fear. Hamilton, the informer too
2 CONC k refuge in Stirling Castle until, on the fall of Arran from power, he m
2 CONC ade a desperate effort to escape. But, as he ran, James Johnston of Wes
2 CONC traw, "pretending a vow he had made to avenge Main's death, did kill hi
2 CONC m as he was flying through the park on the south side of the town".
2 CONT
2 CONT Sir James however survived. He and his son were later accused of involv
2 CONC ement with Mr Walter Balcanquall, an extreme Presbyterian agitator beli
2 CONC eved to be causing sedition, but the case referred to a jury, seems to h
2 CONC ave been dismissed. >.

1 NOTE George Douglas was known as "Big George Douglas". He was a giant of a m
2 CONC an for his time, standing about 6'10" tall and weighing around 280 poun
2 CONC ds. It is not known at this time why he did not raise his son from his f
2 CONC irst marriage with Helen Morgan he remarried and raised a second family o
2 CONC f nine children and paid little attention to his only child by his firs
2 CONC t marriage, Burley Greely.
2 CONT
2 CONT One possibility is that his parents James T. and Celia decided to raise B
2 CONC urley, which they did.
2 CONT According to Burley's son William B. Douglas, there was a terrible row b
2 CONC etween the Morgan and Douglas families over who would get the child as h
2 CONC e was only three months old when his mother was killed. Apparently at l
2 CONC east some of the hard feelings still exist. Mary Elizabeth, another one o
2 CONC f Burley's children has confirmed most of this but only family lore can c
2 CONC onfirm the death of her grandmother as apparently there are no records i
