168. Joseph DOUGLAS158 was born about 1735 in Charles
Co. Maryland.159 Sale160 This Deed is a bill of sale
for a slave, it identifies him as a bricklayer. Considering his family wealth
and social status this is not likely. It is more probable this was akin to a
building contractor today. He was on theTax Lists161 He died in 1808 in Grainger Co., Tennessee.
He signed a will on 15 Dec 1808 in Grainger Co., Tennessee.162 Will of Joseph Douglas

I Joseph Douglass of the County and State aforesaid,
do make and Ordain, this My Last Will and Testament as follows-
Firstly - I give and bequeath all my house hold furniture to my wife Margaret
So long as She lives and after her Death then to be sold and Equally divided
between my five youngest Children Namely Polly Susannah Fanny Nancy and Yaunger.
Secondly - I give and bequeath to my oldest Son William Douglas one Negro Boy
Named Willis which I lend him Some time past
Thirdly - I give and bequeath to my Oldest Daughter Sarah Underwood One Negro
girl Named Hanney which I lent her Some time past and
Fourthly - My Will and Desire is that all the remaining part of My property Not
here to fore mentioned Shall be Sold and Equally divided between My children

Very little information has been found on Joseph Douglas. What little is
known suggest that he lived most of his life in Fauquier Co., Virginia. It is
obvious he died in Grainger Co., Tennessee. His family has been reconstructed
from records available and is believed to be accurate.
