The following is a short biography written for a genelogical magazine
William Buchanan Douglas
William Buchanan Douglas was born on 4 January 1815 on his family's plantation
near Pattonsburg, Botetourt County,Virginia. He was the first son of John B.
and Catherine Sence Douglas. He grew up and received a private education on
the family plantation . His father died when he was just fifteen years old,
leaving William with a substantial inheritance.
He married Catherine Fulwiler on 14 June 1841 in Botetourt County, and they had
four children: Catherine, John W., Gustanza and Evaline. In late 1846 William
arrived in Warren County, Kentucky, with four small children but without a wife.
Apparently Catherine died shortly before the move to Kentucky . On 19 April
1847 he married Martha Elizabeth Alford in Warren County. They set up housekeeping
on a two-hundred-acre farm on Lost Creek, which had been purchased in 1822 by
his father and was part of William's inherited estate. With his second wife,
he had eleven children: James Thomas, Elizabeth Ann, Mary Jane, William Jr.,
Malvinia Frances, Jessee H., Julia, Virginia B., Steven Arnold, Martha and
Hattie. Many descendants of these children still live in the Warren county area
today. He continued farming and disposing of his property in Virginia until his
death on 26 Oct 1887 at his home on Lost Creek. where he is buried in the family
cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church.
William bought out his siblings in 1857 and from then on he owned the Lost Creek
Farm outright. Each sibling owned 20% for which he paid them $60.00 each. Shortly
after that his brother, James J. Douglas, and his wife disappeared in Henderson
county, Kentucky.
William Buchanan (William B) DOUGLAS and Catherine FULWILER were married
on 14 Jun 1841 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.266
William B. Douglas arrived in Warren County Kentucky without a wife but with
four very small children in 1847. His wife, Catherine Fulwiler apparently died
shortly before his move to Warren county, Kentucky. His sister, Mary E. Douglas,
and brother in law, John H. Douglas, made the migration with him. Mary E. and
John H. were first cousins. Catherine FULWILER
(daughter of John FULWILER and Catherine BEEHER) was born about 1823 in Botetourt
Co. Virginia. She died in 1846 in Botetourt Co. Virginia.
Catherine may have died in childbirth as the quick sussession of births stopped
in 1845 after the birth of Evaline.. Considering how quick the first four children
were born and the fact that William B. had eleven children in quick sussesion
in his second marriage. This is the current operational theory and there are
newspapers available for that period which are now under investigation. Catherine
must of died, in probably 1846, for William and his sister Mary and John H Douglas
his brother in law arrived in Warren county in 1846 with four very young children
and married Martha E. Alford in April of 1847. No records have been found to
date on what happened to Catherine or were she is buried. The family of John
B.Douglas had a family cemetery , at Purgertory Creek, which has had it's tombstones
stolen and used for the foundation of a house in the area. William Buchanan
(William B) DOUGLAS and Catherine FULWILER had the following children:
